Will Hammond — Keynote Speaker, Strategic Advisor & Creator of Backward Brilliance

About Will Hammond

I've never seen anything more powerful than a great idea, correctly aimed at a business problem.

I grew up in South Africa, the kid who had to ban himself from reading Fast Company before bed. The ideas left me too wired to sleep. I never grew out of it. That obsession became a career.

20+ years. Thirteen cities. At agencies including Goodby Silverstein & Partners, Chiat\Day, and Saatchi & Saatchi. Across brands from Adobe and P&G to startups with nothing but a vision. Inside that time I learned who actually wins: not the ones with the biggest budget or the smartest team. The ones who refused to aim at anything smaller than the boldest version of the win. I saw it in every market. It always worked the same way.

So I built a system around that. I've run it on hundreds of brands in every category imaginable, even on a country.

On a company: Sound United, home to Bowers & Wilkins, Denon, and Marantz, grew from $320M past $1.25B in three years.

On a country: a category-breaking insight repositioned how the world sees Canada and made it the #3 most desirable destination on earth. An estimated $6B a year.

The mechanism is the same regardless of the category. What it builds in a leader is the ability to produce the winning move on demand. And the strategic confidence to back it consistently.

One leader operating at a higher altitude is an asset. A culture that operates at that altitude is a different business.

I'd die on the hill that ideas are the most powerful force in business. They're the last legal weapon. The only advantage rivals can't regulate, replicate, or outspend. Most companies treat them as a department. I make them the operating system.
